Hemispherical is the name, but the reasoning behind it is, if the cylinder head is flat, the two valves side by side can't be any larger than the diameter of the piston, which limits breathing. With a Hemi, think of it this way, instead of a flat as a jar-lid cylinder head, imagine one that is tent shaped, the valves can be much larger. This usually takes a little larger cylinder head, and more exotic valve gear, but performance was the reasoning here, not simplicity. And Chrysler started building Hemi engines in the early 50s.
