There is a set amount of energy in a gallon of fuel. No more, no less. An internal combustion gas engine running at peak efficiency might extract 40% of it.The rest goes out the rad and exhaust as heat. Mileage comes from running the engine at it's peak efficiency rpm, steady cruise speeds,lighter more aerodynamic vehicles, less losses to power accessories,less losses to powertrain mechanical losses. The next time someone yaps the 100mpg carb BS story. Give the story teller a good swift kick in the kester.
