You are right on IH not making a direct attempt to match serial numbers and I personally believe some units were released with non-matching numbers. That is pretty much undisputable. I do however believe that most non-matching numbered machines can be crossed with a reference and found that the non-matching numbers are from the same year or maybe one year off if they are not. I also think it is fair to say, and it has been my experience, that most tractors released from factory had matching serial numbers. I was just making sure the person here understood some general info on serial numbers before explaining what the deal was on casting codes that they initially asked about.
