Almost all general-purpose motors, with the exception of portable power tools, are induction motors. The main advantage is their low maintenance requirements. The series (brush type) motors produce more power per pound, which is the reason they are used for portable tools. Series motors run at higher speed, so are used in the direct-drive (no belt) table saws, and some other wood-working tools. Ed
