Back in the early 80's working for a Case dealer we used a hose type irrigation rig to pump farmers lagoons. We often used a 1070 to run any on of several 6 inch pumps. (We always used at least a 1370 when we irrgated field crops because we ran about 140psi/600 gpm at the pump and would run as much as 120 hours straight with only 30 minutes off every 12 hours. We pumped from a man made channel of a small river amongest many small trees. We had to resort to a heat exchanger to keep from cooking motors.) Our gun had a 2 inch orfice and we often used as much as 3/4 mile of 6 inch pipe and 900 feet of 4 1/2 inch hose. Pressure and volume both dictate the amount of power you will need. Lowering speed to reduce power requirements is problematic because effeciency falls off faster than speed due to the nature of a centrifigal pump. (ie half speed might only pump 1/3 the volume and maybe 1/4 the pressure). You may not need a lot of pressure but don't forget the lift and amount of restriction introduced by lenght of pipe, number of connections and elbows.

Finding where and how it can be used correctly is key to whether you are using it as an "inelegant hack" or an integral solution to difficult and expens
