Steven, you are right on the money! That transmission is HARD on fluid and it MUST be be changed according to the specified service interval or the owner will have trouble. That same transmission is used in several Ford vehicles. It's a solid tranny if it is maintained. My father's '98 F-150 has the same tranny that's in my '96 'Bird. As far as we know, it still has the original fluid in it(truck has 48k miles on it, he bought it with 35k). I'm pushing him to get it and the filter changed, but so far no dice. Fluid and filter change at my dealer is $80 + tax and out the door. Takes about 45 minutes.
