It is very unlikely, but _possible_ that the 6v generator was rewired to put out 12v.

Basically, you either need to replace the generator with an alt, or go back to all 6v.

Your lighting will also need to match whichever way you go.

6v systems are generally positive ground, while 12v systems are generally negative ground. But people mess that up sometimes - it matters to the regulator/charger, and somewhat to the coil & points. Need to figure out which way...

Another option is an 8v battery, a 6v generator can be tweaked to charge it, & most things will work fine with the 8 volts.

(To charge a battery, you need a bit higher v than what the battery is - a 6v charges at about 7v, while a 12v charges at maybe 14v. So, those 8v can be made to work.)

Whatever, the starter will be happy with no modification on 6, 8, or 12v, pos or neg ground.

All the rest you need to get everything on board with all the same v components.

At some point, you might be best to toss everything out & start over, rather than figuring out what is what now. Might even want to consider doing the electronic thing for points.

My 4 older working tractors are all original 6v, just started 2 of them at zero degrees yesterday here in MN, plan on using another today. Many people like to convert to 12v for easier starting. While I don't disagree, 6v can work just fine if you use the proper wiring size (bigger than 12v) and pay attention to keeping connections clean. Since I have a 12/6v charger, am used to 6v, and the old repair places here are still familiar with 6v, it's been no problem for me.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing. ... [Read Article]
