Alan, in addition to my friend Geralds advice, you can at least check for continuity (which its gotta have on primary and secondary) with an ohm meter. The primary side (the + and - small terminals) may typically be one half to maybe a few ohms and the secondary side (- to high voltage output) is way higher maybe in the hundreds to thousannds of ohms depending on coil. Caution, when yo go to checking that, any time you connect it to current and remove it, there could well be a high voltage spark out the darn thing. But, just because its got continuity at low current and low temp., doesnt mean it couldnt still be breaking down at high voltages or high temp. Still, if it doesnt at least show conmtinuity, its bad. The way Gerald said to check it to ground by opening and closing the points m,anually is a great simple safer way to check its output, but it still doesnt mean it cant break down at operasting temperature. As cheap as the condensors are, just change it out to see how it affects things. The coil will fire with no or open condensor but way weaker, but a dead shorted condensor doesnt allow fire at all.
