The optima batteries are an AGM (absorbed glass mat)battery as is the Exide orbital clone. I have used Optima Batterys for many years for and they have been great. As Bob M says they will not leak acid fumes or liquid unless severly overcharged. For the restorer this means no corroded paint or battery boxes or terminals. Both companies claim that the lead purity and the short path from spiral plates to post cause much less internal resistance. Last fall I was to the WMSTR antique tractor show where it was the Moline tractors showcased this year. What really caught my attention was one fellows collection of Moline 6 cyl diesel tractors. In the battery boxes that once held 3-12V batteries each, was a single little Exide grp 24 sprial cell battery. They easily cranked up those big Diesels time after time all weekend. Also the group 27 batteries in my 1480 IH combine failed in the middle of harvest.I had a 10+ year old optima and a 2 year old Exide orbital setting around the shop that I pressed into service to finish harvest. These 2 well used grp 24 batteries cranked the 466CI diesel faster than the conventional grp 27's ever did. Last week I charged them after 3 idle months. The charger indicated full charge(about 1-1/2 amps) after only a few minuits. I think it is pointless to put new conventional batteries in the combine as these appear to be better than new for who knows how many more Years :).
