My son-in-law had a similar deal going here in NC - the baby bulls weren't any good to the dairy farmer so he sold them for $20 each. Took a while but we've figured out that what happens a lot of the time is we were paying the farmer to let us bury his calf! Some of them do fine, but it seems that the Jersey's are fragile - they're OK as long as the weather stays warm or cold - they can't deal with both. The most important thing is to make sure the calf has spent AT LEAST 4 or 5 days nursing - other wise it doesn't get the colustrum it's GOT to have to survive. Purina 20% fat/20% protein milk replacer seems to work best. I've heard that the meat is sweet and they're supposed to be real good eating. We don't have any large enough to try yet. You can count on loosing some of the Jersey calves - we still don't have a clue why but we're moving toward Holsteens and Gelbviehs - lost too many Jerseys for no reason.
