Started farming from scratch in 1972 after military and college- no family farm or inheritance. Quit full-time dairy/crops a year ago- work construction and farm a bit now. Always did the books by hand with Mn Farm Account Book. (U of MN) Still like hard copy, hand written. Cows always dictated crop mix over cash crop (1/3 of income), computers are fine for analysis, but machines never have to dictate my life. Don't have to worry about making copies, power going out, printing daily records and storing. I can flip pages to check expenses, income, and granted, I don't have up to date totals throughout the year, but I don't need them. No P and L involved. A neighbor told me years ago that she spends 1 1/2 hours per day on her books, and knows what her costs are, but I know that she and hubby are no better off than the rest of us. By the grace of God, and loan forgiveness, they have survived. Go figure.
