I remember reading somewhere about a tinkerer that converted a car to run on "wood smoke". The car had a woodstove thing on the back that was supposed to heat the wood to almost burn but still smolder and the smoke gases were routed to the engine. Neat idea but I haven't heard any more about it lately.
