I would suspect that the combustible gas was mostly carbon monoxide. You might get a little free hydrogen, but I doubt that it would be much. The gasses are the result of incomplete combustion of the wood.

I have done some reading on using such a system. It would have to be almost a last-ditch effort to get somewhere. The problems I read about had to do with other crud in the wood smoke condensing out and gumming things up. This caused maintainance nightmares and very short engine life.

Maybe charcoal would work better.
