We didn't have a tractor, just two mules to farm with. Daddy did a lot of carpenter work in the winter and our only transportation was a 1938 Plymouth. It never would start on a cold morning so he would hook old Tobe to the front bumper with a single tree and say 'git-up'. Old Tobe would start pulling that old car and when the motor caught Tobe would stop. If it died again he'd start pulling again without being told. When Daddy got the car to running they might be 1/4 mile from the house. He'd unhook old Tobe and pat him on the rump and the mule would go home and stand by the lot gate until someone let him in and took off the harness.
