Actually the TA was first in the MTA then appeared on the 300s and 400s in the mid 1950s. In tractors ranging from the 706 to the 1586 a mechanical high/low range in addition to first through fourth (or third in the 15s)gears also coupled with the the TA. Giving you 16 forward speeds. The TA was the first attempt at a power shift. They do have a habit of going out, especially if abused. Some tractors (like our 656) run for years with the low range out, others just stop moving. Repairing a TA IS EXPENSIVE. A popular option had been to remove the TA completely. My brother did this with his 856 when the TA went out on it. He still had 8 forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds.
