First of all, it's not the job of the federal government to run the economy. It's job is supposed to provide a military, federal court and interstate commerce (highways). Although it's the largest employer, it produces nothing. Paul Harvey once said "wealth is created by turning raw materials into a product". All the government does is redistribute wealth. You ever notice a politician will refer to the money as the governments when they want to give it away when it makes them look good. When another politician wants to give away some and the other guy doesn't benefit, it's taxpayer money.

The economy is troubled because the big boom in the '80s wasn't a big boom. Most of the profits were only on paper and not real. Good management for the management. Lots of bonuses. Reality struck last year and we found out that the companies weren't worth what the books said. New management teams come in and cut the company down to what it's worth. Employees who thought they were safe are without jobs.

You can't blame the government for what is not there business.
