stan, My experience is building 5 to 7 race engine a year - not the 1 tractor engine I do now - but the basics are probably the same. If you have a new, hot tanked block, and all the good stuff that goes with it -- use that up to date detergent oil. If you're running something that hasn't been cleaned in 50 years - use a non detergent for fear that the cleaning will be more of a problem than the dirt. The definition of detergent oil has changed over the past 40 or 50 years. 50 year ago, you might as well have thrown Bon Ami or BarKeepers Friend into the oil. Now the stuff is a lot different and less abrasive. The wisdom I see is this: chose an oil that allows the least amount of friction - that's its job. If you want more friction and less engine performance and less cleaning for the oil filter to pick up, listen to the old wives tales. Steve
