Actually it takes more energy to separate them than you will get back when they burn. That's the first law of thermodynamics. You can actually calculate how efficient the process could theoretically be if you know the conditions (generally all you need to know is pressure and temperature) under which the processes occur. This is your second law efficiency. Once you get the theoretical efficiency, that will be the most you can hope for. What you actually acheive will always be less.
