The problem today is that the only tractors that salvage yard operators can buy for a reasonable price are the ones that have next to no usable parts on them. I do business with a guy that has a little two-cylinder salvage business. He says it's next to impossible to buy a tractor that he can get parts he could sell easily. He's got a whole pasture full of main cases, rear axles, frames, steering bolsters and all of the other major parts that have been sitting there forever. How often does somebody come hunting a main case for a '46 JD "A"? He can't go to farm sales and pick up an old "A" or "B" for litte or nothing anymore, because everybody buys them up to join the old tractor craze. And then there's the guys that have one of those old "A"s or "B"s that's common as dirt sitting in their tree line, yet they think they have some priceless antique. It's really pretty funny what some of them think old junk is work. If I had the time and money, I'd probably have a bunch of old wrecks around. It does tug at the heart strings to see an old tractor that was once someone's pride and joy completely scattered all over, but I'm also thankful that they are, because I've used several salvage yard parts on my "G" already. I don't think the salvage men see them as old tractors - just as dollar signs and decimal points.

The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
