Is your basement going to have an exposed wall for the entrance and gararage door, in a way so that the driveway to it doesn't have to be dug into the ground? I would not advise an in basement garage that has a dug out entrance going downward into it. I would only advise one if the entrance is on ground level with the rest of the basement being dug into hillside. An attached garage to house increases fire risks and insurance rates. Using it for a shop further increases the risk of fire. Advantages are, you can drive car right into house, don't need to put shoes and coat on to run out to the car to get something, ussually don't have to pre-run car to warm it up in winter, you would have access to utilitys in the house that you would't in a detached building, and the big thing is you have a place to park your car inside.
