I'll try to explain it without writing a book. On a sliding gear, the gears are splined to the main shaft, and are slid in line with the gears on the countershaft. When in neutral, none of the gears are meshed. Collar shifted, the gears are constantly meshed, but the gears on the mainshaft freewheel around the shaft. When the collar (which is splined to the mainshaft) is moved over, it locks the gear to the mainshaft. As far as they compare? Both work fine if they are not abused, and taken care of IMO.
