Simple answer would by usually. Bought about 30 over the past 20 years. Always find problems when I get them home. Could be as simple as a broken fuel tank mount, or a throwout bearning in wrong to as major as a bad engine. I figure any used tractor (and my range is 10-25 yrs old) I'm going to put up to $2000.00 in, price of doing business. If I buy it for $2000 or more under what I think I can sell it for, I'm happy. I'm not a serious tractor mechanic, but will takle most anything given a shop manuel and a little time.

I usually do a pretty quick test before I buy, my rule of thumb is, "if it's worth the money with the $2000 factor, buy it, if not pass." Only ones I lost big on was one that the guy told me the engine hadn't been touched, when I tore it down it had been bored all it could, cost me $5000 to make it right. Another time got told the same thing and every cylinder had been bored a different size.

Also made money on some, got a Long for 1800, put a 1000 in it and sold it for 4000. And got a '92 Ford 86 hp last fall, transmission case was welded, fenders were the wrong color, and got it for 7000. Sold it today for 9500 Win some, lose some just got to keep trading, net cost is cheaper than bass fishing or golf (for me).
