Like others said only except money orders, or hold up on the delivery till the check clears, most times you won't have a problem accepting checks but one bad one is too many. You should seriously consider accepting Visa/MC, but check out several banks as their fees etc. are all over the map.Some banks will let you setup with the old "knucklebuster" manual machine at a very low or no cost as long as you have a buisness account with them. It seems people in some areas of the country are very trusting about accepting checks. Around here folks look at you like your from Mars if you want to pay by check, it all depends on how many times you get burned.
