My dad said that the fluid recommended for M's by the Mfg. was too heavy in cold weather. If you look inside the case, there are troughs cast in the sides of the case on a slope that are supposed to carry the fluid to another set of bearing. If the viscosity of the lubricant is too heavy, the lubricant will roll out of the trough and not get to the next set of bearings. We always used lighter than Mfg's recommendations and had fewer problems.
