Normally, when a gas burner dies without sputtering, it will be electrical. Start by pulling the coil wire out of the distrubutor cap, stick a plastic handle screwdriver in the end of the wire, hold it a little way from metal, turn the tractor over to see if it is jumping fire. Next, connect a test light light to the Hot wire lgoing to the coil (not the wire going to the distributor. Bump the tractor over. If the points are making contact, the light will go one and off (electricity travels the path of least resistance) If it doesn't light up at all, disconnect it at the coil and see if it comes on. Keep going from there.
