Yeah, well, thems the breaks. I'll tell you how I know. I've got a Farmall Super M that was owned by my great Uncles. When my Uncle Pat died his wife and my Uncle Reg had a falling out. She bought out his part of the farm but he kept the Super M. She had her son in-law go out and drive the Super M to Reg's farm. Well dumb old Don put the battery on the same as on his truck, negative ground. Tractor started and ran fine. Reg was a real "gentleman farmer" so he didn't know any better and ran it negative ground for 9 years until he got to frail to run the tractor and I could finally get on the seat. I noticed right that the battery was in backwards and switched it, it still wouldn't charge. Spent all sorts of time going round and round polarizing this, adjusting that, finally bought a new regulator, polarized it like the instructions said (left the generator alone) and all's been well for 4 years now. Did have to buy a new battery right after the regulator, the old one was spent. So, like somebody else said, put a voltmeter on your battery to confirm it hasn't swapped, or start the tractor, then take the battery and put it on the battery charger. If it charges, its right. I'd still bet a dollar on the regulator.
