I've had good luck using white vinegar. If most of the rust is on the bottom 1/3 or so, buy enough vinegar to cover the rust area. (It might take a couple of gallons, but its not too expensive, about $1.00 per gallon in our part of the world.) Leave it soak for a couple of weeks or more. Then take several short chunks of chain (old cross bars work great) & shake well. Leave it set for a while & repeat the process as often as needed to get all the rust out. Wash well with water. The rust in my tank came out in big flat chunks. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
