You're probably right about the govt regulation thing being everywhere. God knows there have been enough screams from our farmers about a range of different things in the last 20 years or so. One of the ongoing 'inequities' here is the fact that the farmers have to pay freight to get their feriliser, fuel and other needs to the farm gate and then have to pay the freight to get their produce to a market which, in many cases was/is a single-desk marketing organisation/authority. They reckon the marketing authority ought to pay the freight to get the product from the farm gate to the distribution centres. And they have a point. When you buy a tractor, who pays the freight to get it to your farm. Not the manufacturer. You buy a new car and you don't see any item labelled 'freight' on the purchase order but you can bet there is a built-in freight component in what you are paying for the vehicle.

Our farmers are having quite a tussle with salt encroachment DownUnder. Excessive clearing has removed the trees that used to keep the water table down. In many places, the water table is either salt to the top or has/had a fresh water layer sitting on top of salt water. When it rises because of lack of trees to draw from it, it brings this salt up with it.

Another thing that is causing salt encroachment is heavy irrigation, drawing additional mineral-laden water from wherever and spraying/flooding it across a treeless landscape. Long droughts don't help either because there is no fresh water being added to the underground water to keep salt levels down.

It will be interesting to see if anybody tries to stop our sugar cane farmers burning off the cane trash before harvesting. As I understand it, with current technology, several diseases would quickly become rampant in the sugar cane and the industry would be shot up the fundamental orifice like a duck in flight.

We can but wait and keep trying.
