Like you, I have observed that a lot of manufactorers place axles at various locations in relation to the center. I have a 20'+5 dovetail and a 30' straight. Both have tandem 7500# axles/single tires. The 20' has the axles 80% back while the 30 has axles 2/3. The 20' pulls as hard as the 30 even though it weighs a lot less. More of the towed weight is on the towing vehicle, proportionally. It does behave a lot better loaded, feels like I have a lot more control. 20' cattle trailer is also set up 1/3-2/3 and even though it weighs within 400# empty of the 20' flat it pulls like it sdoesn't weigh anything compaired to the flat. The 20' flat also puts a lot of load on the front brakes of the towing vehicle.
