I also put very little faith in the reading of an hourmeter. Not only are they known to fail or be unhooked by someone dishonest, they also generally only indicate hours at rated RPM, at least as far as mechanical ones go. If the farmer putted around at half rated RPM the majority of the time, the hour meter will not indicate anywhere near the actual number of hours on the tractor. The overall condition of the tractor is a much better indicator. I've seen 8000 hour tractors that I would buy way before some 3000 hour tractors I've seen.
