Will, Don't own a 9N but have experieinced similar prolems with a Ferguson. Difference was, I wasn't operating with a load rather was climbing a steep hill. Fixed the problem by replacing the points, plugs, Dist. cap, rotor bug, and plug cables. The tractor is new to me and I'm still working out problems but backfiring and subsequent dying aren't on the need-to-fix list anymore. Hope this helps. Jim
