In Michigan for commerical hauling, you do not need DOT number for intrastate [In State]. But you do need DOT number if you haul interstate [Out State]. Some pick ups that have a curb weight in excess of 5001 lbs. need to be plated for 24,000 lbs. if you pull a trailer. [I am checking into this law right now] Vehicles that weigh more than 5001 lbs. must maintane 500 feet between them, except when you are passing.
