Unleaded gasoline

Have been told that using unleaded fuel in older engines will soon produce burned valves and other horrible problems, especially when the engine is worked hard. What's the real story? A lot of people use unleaded without additives. I'm looking at a gas AC D-17 and want to do what's best for the tractor.
