Most are direct seeded in field. You can use transplants, but they must be grown in cells with a good root ball. It would be like transplanting melons or cucumbers, you would want a young transplant, like 3 weeks old. I would say in Tennessee direct seed in field mid-June. New hybrid varieties that grow in 90-100 days could go in till end of June, even July 4.
