These engines are not known for having head gasket problems. I have run into two problems they are noted for. The early engines had "freeze plugs" in the top of the head under the rocker arms. These are subject to get pinholes. You can check this easily by removing the valve cover and then pressurizing the radiator. Sometimes you don't even have to pressurize. The next step is to remove the oil pan which is not difficult. Pressurize the radiator and bump the engine over. Look for pinholes caused by cavitation. If this is your problem, the cylinder can be sleeved without removing the engine. The old time boring bars clamp at the bottom of the hole next to the one you are boring and then it can be sleeved. I have been down this road twice. When you bump the engine over on the last check, if it hits a hard spot, go no further. You've gotwater on top of the piston. Remove all three of the injectors and seewhich one blows out water. I said earlier this is not a common problem, however, if it was run real hot, it can and does happen. If it reached that point, go ahead and ring it. It's going be hard to startdue to low compression if you don't. Good luck.
