You need to atleast disconnect the mag coil primary winding from the points.Removing the coil would be OK as it no longer serves any purpose. The battery powered coil is mounted externally and hooked to the distributor portion of the mag with a normal secondary coil wire. If you use a coil with a 12V primary winding,no ballast resistor is needed. If you use a coil designed for a ballast resistor,then you will need the resistor which allows you to wire in a resistor bypass system for hotter spark while cranking/starting the tractor. A fuse in the lead from starter switch to amp guage would open the circuit if any accessory or ignition/charging system componant shorted. This might someday save you from a tractor fire. It needs to be large enough to carry full output of the alternator or other acessory.
