Mike, The idea is that you angle the plate at about 45 degrees, top toward you, bottom away from you -- like the front of a tank turned upside down. Then you dig a sand pit under and in front of the plate to catch the rounds. Done all the time in indoor and outdoor ranges. Jim - have you thought of taking what plate you can find and laminating it to an inch or so thickness? Just weld it on the edges. We have a ~ 6' x 6' x 6' manure pile behind the barn. I'm not firing 50 cal. but it does a good job with .223 and .270 rounds as they don't have enough horsepower to penetrate 5 feet of petrified horse poop.
