611B tranmission stuck in gear

I have a 611B that I periodically get stuck in gear ( usually first or reverse). After getting the top off the transmission (not easy as the rods are not clearing the body of the trans at that point) everything seems ok. I replace the gasket, put it together and it works for weeks until... Anyone else have a similar problem, and find a solution?
