8N Head Gasket

The head gasket blew between cylinders 2 and 3. I had a crankcase and exhaust manifold full of coolant. What could cause this so I can solve the problem and not just replace the head gasket. I do not know how old the gasket was. Thanks for your help, you guys were of great assistance with my ignition problems.
