Trevor - I've always changed any lamps over to 12 volt. 12 volt bulbs are usually cheaper, and they are more readily available than 6 volt bulbs. Series dropping resistors can work but they must be sized to match the lamp wattage, they waste power, they can get very hot in operation, and if you have two or more lamps fed from a single resistor, failure of one lamp will quickly cause the other to burn out. An alternate solution to burn 6 volt lamps on 12 volts is to wire two 6 volt lamps in series. However for this to work both bulbs have to be rated for the same wattage, and at least one of the lampholders (the one on the hot side) must be ungrounded. And of course if one lamp burns out it's mate will go dark too...
