If your tractor doesn't have a "hold" position on the hydraulics, you will have to use chains to keep the front of the mower at the right height. Use the tail wheel to set the height that you want to cut. Your top link should have some sort of slack built in. If it doesn't and you go through a ditch you can bend things up.....you can use a chain if the mower doesn't have a built-in slide or pivot mount. Also check to see that the slip clutch is working (if it has one), or if not, that there is a soft "shear" bolt where the pto shaft attaches to the gear box.
