Hi Caroline. I have the same tractor, 1993, and although I haven't used the PTO as of yet, if i remember right I didn't have to use low gear to check the pto, I only used low engine speed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the PTO operation? You said the tractor will not go into low gear for the pto to work. Which low gear did you try? SL1 / SL2? Again, I don't know if it relates to the PTO, but I know that you can't access the reverse gear. If these speeds are selected in the reverse mode the tractor will not move. Could the PTO control lever linkage need adjusting? I'm quoting from my operators manual: 1. Depress the clutch pedal. 2. Start the engine, set the throttle to low speed. 3. Move the PTO control lever rearward to engage the PTO shaft. 4. Release the clutch pedal smoothly to start the laod. Increase engine speed smoothly to rated engine rpm. NOTE: THE CLUTCH PEDAL MUST BE DEPRESSED TO ENGAGE OR DISENGAGE THE PTO SHAFT. The PTO is rated at 540 rpm at 24.0 hp. Be sure not to connect equipment needing more power than the tractor horsepower rating or severe damage will result. Best of luck.
