Marion Davis,(Hagerstown, IN) inventor of the V-plex clutch (sold out to Gates in 60's) and inventor of the cone drive used in early Dixon ZTR mowers had one of his prototype ZTR's equiped with R/C like used on model airplanes and used to set on the deck at his house at the edge of town and mow his yard in the mid/late 60's. His mowers were featured on the cover of a mid 60's Popular Mechanics and if I remember correctly there was a picture of his radio controlled version inside. Sorry, I never pass up a chance to brag about one of my home town heros.
