A compression guage could tell you a lot. I'm sure you could borrow one from a friend to make sure you have decent compression. Once in a while you will run across an engine that has set up that just will not start with out a new set of plugs. I (actually my dad) have an allis G that had 1 year old plugs in it and after the winter it wouldn't hit a lick. We stuck a couple used plugs in and it started hitting but just would not run until 4 new ones were installed. I just rebuilt a 53 Jubilee that was blowing oil really bad. It started just fine until i rebuilt it and the plugs refused to fire under increased compression. Hope this helps.
