Mainly it is personal bias. I've only blown up 2 batteries, both were straight 12v to 12v and were in the tractor (jump starting). Main reasons I like to pull the batteries to charge (I only pull 6v orseries connections): Jump starting puts a lot of strain on the alternator of the jumping vehicle and always a risk of some stray voltage feeding back into some very expensive computer and charging system components. Dealer used that as an excuse back in 90 not to honor about $5K worth of warranty work on a Ford truck I had with a fried computer. Wasn't what happened, they since recalled those computers, but it was enough to void my warranty.
