Boy have you opened a can of worms. The answers you get will be on both sides of the fence. I will through out what I have learnt when other poor fellows asked this question. Detergent in oil is used to suspend dirt particles that get into the engine so that they either get caught in the filter or get drained out when you change the oil. Nondetergent oils had a tendency to leave deposits (crud)if the oil changes were not performed regularly. The first detergent oils had some problems (can't remember what they were) but this has been fixed and todays oils are much better than those that were used when these tractors were built. It is very difficult to find non detergent oil today. If you use detergent oil in an old tractor that has not been rebuilt and that has not had it before you could free up a lot of old dirt and stand the posibility of causing problems. If you do this to an old engine you should change your oil more frequently to help flush the old crud out of the engine. My opinion is that if you have rebuilt your enginge you should definately use detergent oil. A lot of things have changed since the manual for your tractor was wrote, some things for the better, like oil technology.

I think the furthest has been the Two Cylinder 7 in the Amana Colonies last year. Lots of stuff, lots of people. I've also atten
