John, I just finished doing exactly what you decribed - I plowed up some pasture with a two bottom plow behind my JD 40. My 40 is a 40T (I think) with the large rear tires, adjustable rear axle, and wide adjustable front axle. The plow was an old 1936 Little Genuis trailer-type plow with 14 or 16 inch bottoms. The ground had not been plowed before and I had a little trouble with tree roots around the perimeter, but overall, the JD pulled it popping in 2nd gear pretty well. I also have water in the tires. The soil was good and somewhat sandy for around here. I later plowed my father's garden and it was more red clay and was harder to turn. I would recommend a muffler on the JD - I didn't install mine and had a chrome straight pipe I use for tractor pulls and slow races on the hood. Even to a person to whom a 2 cylinder John Deere is music, it got pretty loud after several hours. I have not owned a rototiller, but if I get one, I planned to use it behind my MF250 with low range because I figured that any tractor without low range would move too fast. I'd like to hear from someone who knows.
