I had a dealer that I trade with a good bit, call me and tell me about this "great deal" he had for me. He knew i was looking for a 2240 or 2440 Deere. He had this '78 2440 that some doctor used on his horse farm. 1700 hours, and in "perfect" shape. They had done yearly service on it. He said it was the best one he's seen since they were new. The catch.... It had to be bought NOW. the doctor didn't want to accept the trade offer they made, and wanted top dollar. $11000. That is about all you can get out of one in this area. I made the deal over the phone, trusting the dealers word. STAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The dealer hauled it to me. After three days of rain, I finally got to use it. In 15 minutes, it had started to over heat, and went through 2 gallons of anti-freeze. BAD NEWS. Electraulysis had eaten a hole in a cylinder sleeve. Apparently the good doctor ran it that way for a while. The crank was scarred, the thrust bearing had split on the oil groove. the block had some damage around the bearing. Weld and machine the block, turn the crank, new sleeves, pistons, rings, oil pump, valve job, and a clutch while it was split, plus a 5 page list of "smaller" parts, plus labor $6975. The dealer I bought it from, was "too busy" to get it into his shop. He just basicly, told me to go away. I needed the tractor when I bought it. I had to go ahead and fix it. I now have a VERY NICE 2440. Everything is just like new, NOW. I have $18000 in it. The dealer won't get another penny of my money. Word has it, he's been doing this kind of stuff to several of his older customers, lately.

Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
