for a few years I would get a tri axle load or two of number 4s the size of my fist spread out each year from the local quarry but only in the spring during mud season, then I would pack it into the mud by running my mack over it like a roller. After I got a good base I put modified on top of the no 4s. Modified is no 2s the size of your thumb with smaller stone and screenings mixed in to pack well. Then I got free screenings from around a crusher with some junk mixed in with in, some scrap metal and a ocassinal pumpkin sized rock ect. After spreading that with the 8-n I bought no 1s the size of a pea and spread it out and rolled it in to the screenings. It is real nice but if the ground does not freeze up real hard brfore the snow a snow plow will act like a bulldozer and throw all the fine stuff off to the side.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
