I think they've been called British because Britian controlled India at one time. I also suspect the tractors were more marketable as British. British bikes and cars were popular, so why not tractors? As I recall, when my B-275 was built around 1959, India was independent. IH commissioned Mahindra Corp. to build the tractors for them. Mahindra makes one presently that has around 80 % of the original parts as the B-275. Sheet metal is changed a bit and it has a new engine. Somewhere around here I've got a pretty good history of the dealings IH had with Mahindra and the evolution of the "British" series of IH tractors. I think they started working together during WWII. Along the same argument, I've got a motorcycle that many call British, although it too was built in India for many years. Started out as a Royal Enfield (actually built in England), then became Indian Enfield.
